the elephant dilemma.

We learned about the elephant problem in Kenya in my Environmental Ethics class this week. Apparently conservation and the development of elephant parks has lead to an unsustainable elephant population, and they basically have to choose between the lesser of two evils: forced contraception of the female elephants (which comes with many complications) or the "last-resort" option of culling, if they want to save any elephants in the long run. Thinking about the ethics of it left me feeling drained and helpless yet again (happens a lot in that class) and is yet another example of how we've messed everything up and seem to be clutching at half-baked solutions to try and remedy the massive mistakes that go back a long long time.

Hmm.

On a much more trivial note, I tend to draw a lot in class..and I worry that the tutor is going to think I'm completely uninterested, but in all honesty I actually feel like it relaxes my mind and that I can listen much better. I think I just need to be doing something with my hands for my mind to work.

This girl is one of the illustrative fruits of yesterday's class. (With a bit of digital colour added afterwards..)
