It's true. The simple, free things really are the best. If you string them all together I think they make up the most 'alive' moments of a life.
Here are some that I enjoy. (It's a list to remind myself if anything.)
- Walking on warm sand (particularly when it cushions your feet and is just the right temperature). This activity may be unconsciously improved by the prospect of..
- Jumping into the ocean. The feeling you get when you're suspended under a wave and over the sand, looking up into that fish-eye view of the sun through diaphanous, sea green water just seconds before you break through the surface: bliss.
- Warm sun on your skin. Not to be confused with the burning sensation, this is that awesome feeling when you realise you could easily be lulled to sleep by those comforting warm rays. The only thing that can ever improve on this feeling is if it is enjoyed whilst lying on soft grass, eyes closed in a squinty-happy manner, sporting a sleepy half smile.
- Watching tiny birds do anything. The sudden twists, the precarious dives. All in a miniature flighty world of insect-hunting, nest-building and bird-singing. I could spend hours, maybe days watching them, and still feel completely dumbstruck at the amazing way they move through the air.
- The moon. Or more specifically, trying to looking at it as though for the first time. The moon looks INCREDIBLE tonight from where I am. It's hanging over the ocean with an eerie red glow and looks so full and ripe (like a peach!). How incredible that we can look at such a beautiful thing every single night. This big, pearly reminder that we are floating in space. Awesome.
I could go on, and on, and on. There are so many amazing, free, simple things to enjoy. I seriously struggle to think of any bought 'product' that could give me the sense of lasting joy that even thinking about these moments gives me.
Now all I have to do is remember that, day in, day out. Easy.
